Get 'er Done: Stop Procrastination from Killing Progress!

One of the greatest enemies of success is PROCRASTINATION! My mother used to tell me, "Why put off until tomorrow, what you can and should do, today?" Procrastination is often unintended, and is the result of life getting in the way of our good intentions.

Emergencies arise, spontaneous decisions have to be made, and time runs out sooner than we anticipate. Before we know it, we have had to shift our priorities and put off tasks on our to-do list.

The problem with procrastination is that is kills progress!

Here are a few tips to help you successfully stop procrastination and keep your vehicle of progress moving forward:

  • Avoid Distraction: We so often try to multi-task - check email, scroll through Facebook or Twitter, talk on the phone, and carry on a conversation with our spouse or kids, all while trying to work or perform a much needed task. More often than not, multi-tasking is not productive because it is filled with distractions. Avoid distractions by turning it off, placing your electronics in another room, ask your family for a few minutes to complete something important, and do what you need to do.

  • Create a Task List: If you don't write down your tasks, it will be easy to become unfocused and lose sight of the mission. Cross off completed tasks, and you'll discover how much you actually were able to accomplish on a daily basis.

  • Break Big Tasks Into Bite-Sized Portions: When a task seems too big to accomplish, it can overwhelm you to the point of paralysis and avoidance. Instead of trying to take on a behemoth of a task, break down large tasks into smaller, more doable tasks.

  • Rise Early: When you awaken early and get to work, you will find fewer distractions from the outside world, and you will have quiet time to focus and accomplish tasks early in the day. This is a great concept because it brings great satisfaction when multiple tasks are accomplished before noon.

When you set those boundaries, you will discover how easy it is to accomplish more in less time.
