Is Your Life Past Due?

Have you ever received a bill in the mail that had a big red stamp on it saying, "PAST DUE -- FINAL NOTICE," reminding you that you are behind on payment?

Receiving such a notice usually means not only are you late on making the payment, you may be in debt!

What about living? Are you in debt there, also?

Are you behind in making payment toward fulfilling your life-long dreams or taking that long-awaited vacation. Have you postponed the move you need to make, or simply given up on ever living the life you know God designed for you, but feels too far out of reach?

Often age becomes a factor. When young, we procrastinate because we feel we have plenty of time to do what we want to do later in life. The problem is one day we wake up and we're in our 40s, 50s, 60s, or beyond, and time has completely eluded us.

I recently had a conversation with a gentleman who is now 58 years old. He shared with me he always wanted to run in a marathon. He used to be an excellent track and field star in high school, but he spent most of his life working and raising his family. His wife passed away from breast cancer 12 years ago, and his own health had a few challenges.

I asked him why doesn't he pursue fulfilling that dream, and his answer was pretty common. "I'm too old to do that now," he responded with a snicker.

I reminded him of Harriette Thompson, who, at the age of 92, became the oldest woman to complete a marathon. In 2015, she finished the San Diego Rock 'n' Roll Marathon (benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society) in 7 hours, 24 minutes, and 36 seconds.

A three-time cancer survivor, concert pianist, and grandmother of 10, Mrs. Thompson told the Charlotte Observer that losing her husband, both parents, and a number of family members to cancer made "it personal" and "something that I really feel is important." She has raised more than $100,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society over the course of the past 16 years.

Harriette hasn't had it easy. Her body hasn't always cooperated. But, her desire to raise awareness and money for her cause drives her to compete and to fulfill her dream.

Sadly, life has an expiration. Eventually, all of us will run out of time. That's merely the reality of life. What is more sad is the fact so many have stopped living before their expiration date even draws near!

We do not know when our time on earth is through. Only God knows. But, one thing I know we all should live by is the fact we are on FINAL NOTICE that time is marching on and we should make the most out of every minute.

I have always said I will never quit working. I will never quit living. I will never stop learning. I will never stop giving or helping others. Even long after I am gone, my hope is that my legacy will continue and my work will last for generations to come. But that can only happen if I invest of myself NOW and not wait until it's PAST DUE!
